Put employees’ careers on a fast-forward track
What can you do to help them move up the ranks?
You want your employees to advance in their careers and possibly become managers themselves one day. What can you do to help them move up the ranks? Try these tactics:
• Align your goals. Talk to employees about their career goals and how they mesh with your organization’s mission. You may find something the employee wants to do that supports your organization’s long-term strategy and use that as a basis for development.
• Make a plan. Set some goals, and work together on a plan to achieve them. It might involve training, college courses, leading a special project, or other endeavors, but ground the plan in your mutual objectives for the employee and your organization.
• Look for opportunities within. Training seminars can be useful, but don’t forget the opportunities available inside your organization. Look for projects your employee can lead or contribute to. Get his or her name in front of top managers. Push the employee outside the comfort zone so he or she gets used to greater responsibility at a reasonable pace.
