10 weird excuses why people are late for work

If you need a good laugh to start your week, here are 10 oddball excuses people have given when they're delayed. Look closely; there's a little creativity in a few of these.

Ever heard the excuse, “I was late for work because my leg was trapped between the subway car and the platform”? Employees often have legitimate reasons for being delayed, such as traffic and daycare woes. But the more unusual excuses can leave you scratching your head in bewilderment. (The above excuse with the subway actually turned out to be true, believe it or not.)

A new CareerBuilder.com survey lists 10 oddball reasons people have given for being delayed.

My favorites:

  • “I had a job interview at another company.”
  • “Employee got distracted watching the Today show.”

The survey also revealed that a whopping 16 percent of workers reported they were tardy at least once a week or more.

Although many workplaces now offer flexible schedules, employers are still paying attention to timeliness. More than one-third of employers said they fired a worker for continuously showing up late.
