These tips for recruiting top IT professionals could apply to almost any employee you want to attract.

Good employees are hard to find no matter what business you’re in or what position you’re trying to fill. These tips for recruiting top IT professionals could apply to almost any employee you want to attract in 2013:
• Offer a competitive salary. Money isn’t everything, but an attractive salary and a generous compensation package provide a good place to start—and a substandard one will send in-demand candidates looking elsewhere. Do some homework on your industry so you can make a good offer.
• Be flexible. Lots of jobs these days don’t have to be performed exclusively in the workplace—and more and more employees are looking for the opportunity to telecommute or otherwise work from different locations. Some jobs require a full-time presence, of course, but don’t insist on sticking to an outmoded view of “work.”
• Embrace social media. Use Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social media sites to attract good people and show what you’ve got to offer. And don’t change your tune once an employee starts work. Many of today’s employees, particularly younger ones, take access to the online universe for granted. Stay on top of productivity, but don’t treat all Internet activity as loafing.
• Deliver development opportunities. Talented, ambitious people want to grow and learn new things. Support their development with training, mentoring, and other options. Listen to what they want to learn and where they want to go in their careers, and do what you can to help them bloom.
